Creative thinking - What is it? How can teachers help students develop it? How can I possibly do all that in music class/rehearsal? This session will answer these questions and describe proven strategies to raise student achievement, motivation, and creativity in the process.

Mel Pontious, the Wisconsin state fine arts education consultant, taught music for 27 years in the general, choral, and instrumental areas, elementary through university. His degrees are from University of Wichita (BME, cum laude); Oberlin Conservatory (MME); and University of Illinois (Ed.D). He has conducted state and national workshops, and his articles on music and art education have been published nationally. A presenter at state and national conferences, he is currently directing an action research project on student-centered learning in the arts and its effects on creativity, achievement, motivation and higher-order thinking.
