Facing the many challenges teaching music today, what are the ways that teachers can both compete with and match the creative energy of music technologies and games while maintaining the rich traditional aspects of large ensemble programs? Topics to be
explored include repertoire, pedagogical techniques, ensemble alternatives and incorporation of nontraditional elements into school music programs.

Andrew Mast is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, he position he has held since the fall of 2004. He conducts the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band while teaching courses in band history, conducting and the freshman studies program. Prior to his appointment at Lawrence, he was Director of Bands at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa where he conducted the Symphonic Band and University/Community Orchestra, taught conducting and music education classes and served as department chair. He also conducted the Quad City Wind Ensemble and founded the Quad City Area Youth Wind Symphony. He has been recognized for his teaching via the Young Teacher Award at Lawrence in 2009 and the Faculty of the Year award at St. Ambrose in 2004.
