Improvisation is considered by many to be an integral component of vocal jazz. How do you incorporate a vocal jazz solo when one is not written in? Implications for the WSMA festival rubric will be considered.

Janette is in her 21st year teaching vocal music at Sparta High School. She received her BME from Central Missouri State University and her MEPD from UW-La Crosse. She serves as the WCDA Vocal Jazz Repertoire & Standards chair, Vocal Jazz All-State Honor Choir chair, and WSMA/WCDA Vocal Jazz Institute chair. Her vocal jazz ensembles have been invited to perform at the Phil Mattson Carnegie Hall festival four times. They travel to several jazz festivals each year including Western Michigan, Southwestern Community College, Lawrence University, and McNally Smith. She has taught vocal jazz camps at UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse, and taught the UW-La Crosse Vocal Jazz Ensemble for three years. She and her husband Mark gig regularly in the La Crosse area.
