General Information
|
When & Where?
The Next Direction for Band will be held on September 12-14, 2008 at the Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, Wisconsin. |
Who can attend?
Students in Wisconsin entering grades 11 and 12. |
How many can attend?
Enrollment is limited to the first 90 outstanding band students to apply. |
What does it cost?
The Conference fee is $200 per student which includes room and board, music and materials. There is a non-refundable application fee of $15. Applications received after July 1, 2008 will be accepted based on remaining space available.

How do I register?
To register,:
- Print and complete the Student Registration Form (pdf).
- Be sure to have your band director sign your Registration Form! Any unsigned application forms will not be processed until a signature is provided.
- Mail your completed and signed Registration Form (pdf) with the $15 registration fee to: WMEA, Attn: Jennifer Neuville, 1005 Quinn Drive, Waunakee, WI, 53597.
- Accepted students will receive the Membership Acceptance Contract (sent via US Mail) by August 1. Completed Membership Acceptance Contracts must be mailed with the $200 Conference fee by August 15.

Special Guest Director - Quincy Hilliard, La Fayette, LA

Quincy C. Hilliard’s compositions for wind band are published by a variety of well known publishers. He is frequently commissioned to compose works, including one for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and a score for a documentary film, The Texas Rangers. For many years, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has recognized him with annual awards for the unusually frequent performance of his compositions. Hilliard is regularly invited to conduct, demonstrate effective techniques and adjudicate festivals throughout the world.
Hilliard is composer in residence and the Heymann endowed professor of music at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. Previous teaching positions were at Nicholls State University, Florida International University, North Marion High School (Sparr, Florida) and White Station Junior and Senior High School (Memphis, Tennessee).
He holds the Ph.D. in music theory and composition from the University of Florida where, in 1999, he was recognized as the Outstanding Alumnus of the School of Music. He holds a masters of music education from Arkansas State University and the bachelor of science in music education from Mississippi State University where he was designated College of Education 1998 Alumnus of the Year. Hilliard’s early music experience was as a trumpet player in the public elementary and high school of his native Starkville, Mississippi. He is also president of Hilliard Music Enterprises, Inc. a personal consulting firm, which has a corporate board of distinguished music educators. |

Explore the the "why" behind rehearsal procedures and teaching strategies. These talk back sessions will follow ensemble rehearsal and allow students to reflect on their learning experience and begin thinking as a teacher.

College Survival Guide- Collegiate Student Panel
Facilitated by Matt McVeigh, Band Director at Kimberly High School
College students will give you the ins and outs on surviving college especially our freshman year. Included will be tips on what to start thinking about now, and "what I wish someone would have told me." In addition to taking participant questions time will also be spent discussing selecting a the appropriate college, and preparing for a college level audition.

Mini-Session: Music History
With Jack Plovanich, Band Director at Westosha Central High School
Students will begin to think about the advancement of musical over several historical periods. This session is an overview of music history that will begin to shape students thinking of music beyond the ensemble experience and into a historical frame of reference. |
Mini-Session: Conducting and CMP
With Rich Tengowski, Band Director at Kohler High School
Learn the basics of instrumental conducting. Emphasis will be placed an basic conducting skills, but also explore how conductors create the appropriate mood through their physical gestures. |
Mini-Session: Theory and Sightreading
With Matt McVeigh, Band Director at Kimberly High School
This session is a primer for freshman level music theory and sight reading performance. Focus will be on skills students can work on to gain a head start in their college music theory study.
