Although we're a small chapter consisting of four members, our chapter is doing great things. This semester, Spring 2007, we are taking part in a research study of American and Mexican children's folk songs. Our chapter will be working with a group of immigrant children at Centro Guadalupe, the Diocese of Madison Multicultural Center. We will teach the children American songs and learn Mexican children's songs from them, with activities designed to help the children make connections between the two cultures. After we have completed our work with the children and built a collection of authentic music from Mexico, we will be traveling to the Mexican state of Queretero. In Queretero we will experience local culture and learn about music educators' efforts to revive the traditional folk music, Huapango. We will also be studying two ways of teaching Huapango, in a formal setting and in an informal setting. The Spring 2007 semester promises many educational and exciting experiences!
