She is in great demand as a freelance bassist in both classical and jazz settings. As an orchestral bassist she has performed as prinicipal bass with the La Crosse Symphony, Keewenaw Symphony and in the Section of the Cheyenne Symphony . Karyn has performed in concert with many jazz artists including Diane Schuur, Ernie Watts, Clark Terry, James Williams, Red Rodney and Kurt Elling. Currently she performs with the Great River Big Band, and The La Crosse Jazz Quartet.
Karyn was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship to study with bassist, Rufus Reid and has also performed in master classes for Gary Karr. She was a finalist in the 1997 International Society of Bassists Jazz Bass Competition. Karyn is an active member of The International Society of Bassists, and Wisconsin Music Educators Association. She is a past president of WI-IAJE and served as the Jazz Education Chair for WMEA in 1997. Her method books for beginning bass students, Bass Sessions, are published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company.
She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse and Master’s degree in String Bass Performance and Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado.

| | Background: | Five By Design is the Minneapolis vocal quintet that features UW Eau Claire graduates: Lorie Carpenter-Niska, Kurt Niska, Terrence Niska, and Michael Swedberg, the fifth member, Sheridan Zuther is a UM-Kansas City graduate.
IFive By Design is celebrating its 15th anniversary (2009) in the symphony pops market and has appeared with more than 200 orchestras including: the Atlanta Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Houston Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and Vancouver Symphony orchestras.
The Washington Post heralded Five By Design's Kennedy Center debut with the National Symphony as "the best NSO pops performance of the season." The vocal quintet has collaborated with WGVU in the development of its theatrical production, Stay Tuned, as a PBS television special.
The members of Five By Design are marvelous music educators and we encourage Wisconsin choral music directors to consider bringing this outstanding ensemble to their community. |
