The mission of the  Wisconsin Music Educators Association is to support music education by representing the shared interests and needs of Wisconsin music educators and fostering their professional growth in a global society.  In carrying out this mission, WMEA leaders and members are guided by the Strategic Plan that follows.  This plan is reviewed and refreshed twice each year so that strategies and actions remain relevant and move toward accomplishing each goal on behalf of the members of the Association.

Goal A: Lead advocacy for music educators in Wisconsin.
Goal B: Attract and retain quality music educators to the profession.
Goal C: Provide music educators with meaningful opportunities for professional development.
Goal D: Promote lifelong learning in music.

Strategic Plan - Goal A:
Lead advocacy for music education in Wisconsin.


Action Plan:

A.1.       Expand partnerships with other education organizations to maximize advocacy efforts. 
  A.1.1.     Partner with other State Arts Organizations to develop a State Arts requirement for Wisconsin.
A.2.       Develop a legislative strategy that support the mission of WMEA.
  A.2.1.     Utilize the WMEA email database to promote quick response to legislative issues. 
  A.2.2.     Increase the number os contacts between music educators and their respective legislators about music education events, issues, and achievement within their area. 
  A.2.3 Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education schedules a biennial legislator breakfast on odd years at the State Music Copnference.
A.3.       Be a resource to state music educators about advocacy. 
  A.3.1.     Increase member participation in advocacy efforts.

Strategic Plan - Goal B:
Attract and retain quality music educators.


Action Plan:

  B.1.       Recruit new music educators to the profession. 
    B.1.1.     Plan 2011 string track in partnership with WCDA Next Direction Conference for music education careers. 
    B.1.2.     Encourage new Tri-M chapters with emphasis on junior high/middle school, using CMENC as a connector group. Survey Tri-M advisors, again, as to how they organized their group, what activities they do and WHY it is worth the extra effort.
    B.1.3. Connect CMENC with Honors program students at October rehearsal. Have Honors Conductors and CMENC speak to students about music careers.
    B.1.4. Survey Tri-M membership to determine the need and interest of statewide activities or conferences for Tri-M.
  B.2.       Establish and sustain strong communication, networking, programs and support for music educators.  
    B.2.1.     Post events to WMEA Facebook group, a mentoring/networking opportunity, link to WMEA webcasting when fully operational. 
    B.2.2.     Coordinate content integration with WMEA Newletters, blogs, website and the WMEA Facebook group. 
    B.2.3. Develop a "Young/New Teachers" strand intending to design conference sessions, offer classes at Wisconsin Center for Music Education and create other networking/mentoring opportunities to teachers in their first 5 years. All breakout groups will have 1 session that attracts teachers in first 5 years. WMEA membership packets to be handed out at these sessions.
    B.2.4. Provide Regional Vice-Presidents with lists of lapsed membership so that contact can be made.
  B.3.       Focus WMEA membership features and benefits to meet the needs of the profession.  
    B.3.1.     WMSTE Chair will provide WMEA membership chair information regarding newly graduated music educators from colleges and universities around the state and provide to mentoring project chair.
    B.3.2.     Disseminate membership information via email to non-members and lapsed members.
    B.3.3. Contact inactive CMENC chapters to encourage reactivation in partnership with MENC Chapter Advocate position on CMENC Steering Committee.
    B.3.4. Develop and conduct electronic survey to assess needs of membership and determine reasons for non-membership.

Strategic Plan - Goal C:
Provide music educators with meaningful opportunities for professional development.


Action Plan:

  C.1.       Program and implement professional development opportunities for music educators at the WCME.  
    C.1.1.     Facilitate add on certification in general music through partnerships between university programs and WCME 
    C.1.2.     Continue to explore the legality of recording and/or posting conference sessions, WCME workshops and school groups on the internet. 
    C.1.3.     Implement initial phase of video webcasting including embedded or linked videos through teacher tube my site subscription. 
    C.1.4. Professional development opportunities will be expanded to include at least 3 workshops with satellite locations throughout the state.
  C.2.       Communicate the connection between music education and current educational initiatives. 
    C.2.1.     Inform music educators about current initiatives through conferences, workshops, Soundwaves, WSM and WMEA Facebook. 
  C.3.       Provide leadership for music educators in designing and implementing Professional Development Plans.  
    C.3.1.     Host PDP Workshop at Wisconsin Center for Music Education. 
    C.3.2. Continue conference sessions clarifying the PDP process.
    C.3.3. Maintain a page on the WMEA site for PDP's, PDP Overview, Link to Trained DPI members, sample plans
    C.3.4. Provide a link on the WMEA website to a list of teachers with NTSB National Board Certification to be used as a resource.
    C.3.5. Provide information for experienced teachers to explore transferring to PI-34 plan and proceeding on Master Teacher Level.

Strategic Plan - Goal D:
Promote lifelong learning in music.


Action Plan:

  D.1.       Improve the quality and availability of early childhood music and movement opportunities.  
    D.1.1.     Connect with early childhood teachers. Strategize, develop standards and communicate to preschool/daycare learning centers, Head Start programs and K4-2nd grade elementary general music teachers. 
    D.1.2.     Seek and develop professional development with like-minded organizations: NAEYC, ECMMA and Music Therapy Association. 
    D.1.3. Provide information/materials/support for early childhood music advocacy.
    D.1.4. Seek and develop funding strategies for early childhood practitioners and programs.
    D.1.5. Identify and assist populations with special needs.
  D.2.       Increase opportunities for adults to participate in music.  
    D.2.1.     Develop an online resource for community music organizations.
