Feature Article

One of the most important things that a music teacher does in his or her community is to advocate for music education. As a trained music professional, the task of educating parents, business leaders, school administrators and community members about the importance of music is just as important as training our students.
Master Teacher Interview

Raymond Roberts is the Director or Vocal Music at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts (MHSA) where he has taught since 1991. Roberts, a graduate of the Booker T. Washington High School of the Arts in Dallas, Texas, earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University. Previously, he was Tenor Soloist and Assistant Director of the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, Director of the Plymouth Concert Chorale, and Tenor Soloist at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. He also performed the role of Normanno in the Skylight Opera Theater production of Lucia di Lammermoor. Currently, he conducts the chancel choir at First United Methodist Church in West Allis.
Professional Development Opportunities
 
The Wisconsin Center for Music Education will be offering several professional development opportunites, such as Technique and Pedagogy; Sound Reinforcement, Recording and Editing; Assessment in Action; and World Music Drumming Circle. As you make plans for the rest of your school year and the summer ahead, be sure to visit the Center web pages often for developing details on these exciting workshops.
WMEA Capitol Concerts
 
The State Capitol will be filled with voices and instruments over the next several weeks and beyond. In celebration of "Music In Our Schools Month," the Wisconsin Music Educators Association is again sponsoring school music group performances in the Capitol Rotunda. Concerts will be held on select days each week in March and April, between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Visit the WMEA web site for a Capitol Concerts schedule.

CMP Summer Workshop, June 26 - 30!

New Downloadable Music Advocacy Packet
 
The Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education (WAME) recently developed an online music advocacy packet for teachers of all levels. Designed especially with the new teacher in mind, the packet includes a variety of helpful information and tools for supporting music education. Topics include music as an art form, parent and community relations, working with the media and more. By clicking on the "Bookmarks" tab in Acrobat Reader, sections of the packet can be quickly accessed.
