Feature: Living the Good Life
by Jim Meuth
For me, teaching music and living in Wisconsin is really living the good life. Like many of you, I get to go to work (school) every day and do what I love. When I walk down the street in my community, everyone knows me and has a friendly word or greeting. They respect me for what I do for them and their kids. I am one of the music teachers in my town, and everyone loves music.
WMEA Distinguished Service Awards

WMEA proudly recognized the 2006 Distiguished Service Award recipients at the Wisconsin State Music Conference General Session in October. The following awards were given: Richard G. Gaarder Award, Distinguished Administrator Award, Michael G. George Award and Community Service Awards.
Help Plan Conference 2007

Mark your calendar for the 2007 Wisconsin State Music Conference Planning Session -- January 6, 2007, 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m., Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells!

All WMEA members are invited to join with other music educators from around the state at this special planning session. This is your chance to be involved. Your help is needed:

  • Identifying topics and presenters.
  • Refining and prioritizing workshop sessions.
  • Suggesting special guests and events.
Wisconsin Award for Excellence in Teaching Music
  Deadline - March 9, 2007
The Wisconsin School Music Association and Wisconsin Music Educators Association are proud to offer another great way to recognize professional educators who inspire students with their own passion for music. Details can be found in the nomination packet. Nomination forms are due March 9, 2007. The recipient(s) of the Wisconsin Award for Excellence in Teaching Music will be announced in April 2007.

Upcoming Professional Development Workshops

Four Wisconsin State Music Conference sessions were selected to be expanded through follow-up workshops offered at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education:
  • Kathy Bartling - Infusing Technology Into the Elementary Music Curriculum, February 3
  • Karen Iken - Connections: Music and Literacy, February 10
  • Richard Tengowski - Your Students Can Compose, February 10 and April 14
  • Bob Baca - Starting a Jazz Program From Scratch, February 24
Presentations from these sessions have been recorded and will be available online in January; therefore conference attendance is not required to attend a follow-up workshop. Some of these workshops will also be offered by video conference at various locations around the state, and most are available for graduate credit. For information on these workshops and all upcoming Center programming, including online registration, visit the Center web pages (link below).

Sound Taps Wisconsin!

The third annual "Sound Taps Wisconsin!" contest will be held in eleven different locations around Wisconsin during the week of April 16, 2007. "Sound Taps Wisconsin!" was created to build awareness of the need for a new generation of musicians who are willing and capable of sounding Taps at the funeral of veterans and to education people about the option of earning tuition vouchers for participating in these solemn occasions.
