Feature Article
by Bob Demaree   New Ways of Talking in the Classroom
How many of us were told, "You're talking too much in your rehearsal - conduct more and talk less?" I know that I was, and I think that I've probably been guilty (and perhaps even fairly so) of saying it to young undergraduate conductors. But - isn't it necessary to stop and talk at times to our students, especially about the meaning of the music in which we're working? Every piece has a story and tells a story - do we discuss this story with our students? Shouldn't we?
Master Teacher Interview
by Michael Rosewall   with Leslyn Hooper
Leslyn Hooper has taught music classes for children with disabilities at Northeast Wisconsin's Syble Hopp School for over three decades. Hooper is a graduate of the Chicago Music College or Roosevelt University and received her Masters degree from St. Norbert College. She is married to John Hooper, former Chief Investigator for De Pere Police Department; they have two children and two grandchildren.
PI 34: Primer for Currently Licensed Teachers
by Nancy Rasmussen
Are you aware of the new licensing laws that took effect August 31, 2004? You probably have heard of this new system for licensing referred to as "PI 34." How does this new licensing system impact currently licensed teachers? The immediate impact will be in the role you play in assisting beginning teachers through the PI 34 licensing process by serving as a mentor or on a Professional Development Team (PDT). The long-term impact might be on your own license renewal if you choose to convert your five-year license by completing a Professional Development Plan (PDP)
