with Sharon Morell
Sharon Morell has recently retired from the
day-to-day teaching of junior high band
students after an amazing 35 years with the
Stevens Point school district. When she was
first hired she taught in five different
elementary schools. Her position eventually
led her to teach exclusively junior high
bands at PJ Jacobs in addition to becoming
the music coordinator for the district.

The arts can be used as a reinforcing tool
and be treated as core curriculum in our
schools. Somehow the arts in many cases have
been turned into this entity that only exists
if everything else in the school is funded at
full capacity. Through the use of arts,
students learn practical applications for
traditional subject areas.

Recognizing people who make a difference is
one of the most rewarding activities for any
organization. WMEA sponsors several awards to
recognize people who have sustained a
commitment to music education and made a
positive impact in the school, community or
state. Nominate someone you know! The May
deadlines are not far off.
