From the President - MENC National Conference
by Kenneth L. Liske
An event of a lifetime for the Wisconsin music education community is fast approaching, as our state plays host to the 61st MENC Biennial In-Service Conference, April 9-13. Register by February 15 to receive early-bird rates! For anyone who has never attended a national MENC conference, now is the time, and it is also an exceptional opportunity for school administrators and school board members to gain first-hand experience of the incredible potential for music education.

Teachers - Be sure to invite your administrators. Download invitational letters from WMEA and MENC now (PDF).

Master Teacher Interview
by Brenda Zimmerman   with Sharon Morell
Sharon Morell has recently retired from the day-to-day teaching of junior high band students after an amazing 35 years with the Stevens Point school district. When she was first hired she taught in five different elementary schools. Her position eventually led her to teach exclusively junior high bands at PJ Jacobs in addition to becoming the music coordinator for the district.
Feature - Music: A Core Subject Within Our Curriculum
Barry R. Applewhite
The arts can be used as a reinforcing tool and be treated as core curriculum in our schools. Somehow the arts in many cases have been turned into this entity that only exists if everything else in the school is funded at full capacity. Through the use of arts, students learn practical applications for traditional subject areas.
Service Award Nominations

Recognizing people who make a difference is one of the most rewarding activities for any organization. WMEA sponsors several awards to recognize people who have sustained a commitment to music education and made a positive impact in the school, community or state. Nominate someone you know! The May deadlines are not far off.
Music In Our Schools Month

Celebrate Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) this March by attending Capitol Concerts. In just a couple of weeks, the State Capitol will be filled with voices and instruments. In celebration of MIOSM, WMEA is again sponsoring school music group performances in the Capitol Rotunda. Concerts will be held on select days each week in March and April, between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.
