WMEA Elections
 
WMEA is pleased to announce the election of two district vice presidents: Scott Emmons of Brown Deer (southeast district) and Jim Scheuer of Owen (north central district). Both will begin serving their terms in July. Congratulations to all candidates for being nominated for these positions. Thank you especially for your continual dedication to music education through leadership in all that you do.

Service Award Nominations
  Reminder - Deadline is May 15!
Recognizing people who make a difference is one of the most rewarding activities for any organization. WMEA sponsors several awards to recognize people who have sustained a commitment to music education and made a positive impact in the school, community or state. As a member, you are invited to nominate such a person for one of these awards:

  • Community Service Award
  • Distinguished Administrator Award
  • Distinguished School Board Member Award
  • Michael G. George Distinguished Service Award

Nominations for each of these awards will be screened after the May 15 deadline. Awards will be presented by the WMEA president during the Wisconsin State Music Conference keynote session in Madison this October.

Summer Professional Development Opportunities
 

Wisconsin Center for Music Education
Space is filling quickly for summer professional development workshops. Register now to secure your place in a variety of workshops ranging from general music, band, choir and orchestra to technology. Graduate credit is available for all courses.

Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance
The 2009 Comprehensive Musicanship Through Performance (CMP) Workshop will be held June 22-26 at UW-Stevens Point. Download the workshop brochure [.pdf] and registration forms now. Registration is still open based on available seats. Hurry, while there is still room!

Listening Project
 
The WMEA Listening Project State Festival will be held Saturday, May 16, 9:30 a.m. at Waunakee High School.
Special Opportunity for Music Students
 
In conjunction with Banddirector.com and an appearance of the Boston Brass at the 2009 Wisconsin State Music Conference, composer Rick DeJonge is offering an opportunity for music students to submit a theme for his composition that will be premiered at the conference. For consideration, students simply need to submit an eight-bar theme, including tempo and time signature, written in concert pitch. Go to www.banddirector.com for all details.
Wisconsin State Music Conference
 
The annual Wisconsin State Music Conference is set to begin October 28 at Monona Terrace Convention Center, Madison. The 2009 conference theme is "Creativity to the Core." The conference features:

  • Over 75 clinics covering all aspects of music education
  • 20 instrumental and choral performing groups
  • 130+ business and educational exhibitors
Be sure to regularly visit the Attendee Resource Center for a wide variety of conveniently located conference information.
In Memoriam: Eunice Boardman (1925 - 2009)
 
Renowned music educator, trainer and researcher Eunice Boardman, of Rock Island, IL, passed away May 5, 2009. Acclaimed in her field nationwide, Boardman, who was director of the music department at UW-Madison, remains particularly close in heart to many Wisconsin educators. Among her many honors was receiving the WMEA Distinguished Service Award. A memorial service is planned for May 16.
