WMEA Elections

As the result of a member-wide election, WMEA is pleased to announce that Richard Tengowski of Kohler is the new president-elect and will begin serving his term in July. Election ballots will soon be mailed for vice presidents of the Northwest and Southwest districts.

Congratulations to all candidates for being nominated and running for these positions. Thank you especially for your continual dedication to music education through leadership in all that you do.

Feature Article
by Kathryn Spargo   You Will Be Heard
When I was asked to run for a WMEA office last spring, I really didn't know much about how our state music organizations worked. I realized we had three branches of our state music support system: Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) dedicated to school issues, Wisconsin Music Educators Association (WMEA) dedicated to music educator issues and Wisconsin Foundation for School Music (WFSM) dedicated to raising money for state music issues. We are lucky in our state to have the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee that houses these three branches.
Feature Interview - Carrie Gruselle
by Lynn Seidl
Carrie Gruselle teaches orchestra for grades 4-8 in the Appleton Area School District and is also the lead teacher for the Lawrence University String Project and director of the Lawrence Academy String Orchestra, a select string ensemble for grades 5-8. She is also a well-known composer and arranger.
Service Award Nominations
  Deadline - May 15!
Recognizing people who make a difference is one of the most rewarding activities for any organization. WMEA sponsors several awards to recognize people who have sustained a commitment to music education and made a positive impact in the school, community or state. As a member, you are invited to nominate such a person for one of these awards:

  • Community Service Award
  • Distinguished Administrator Award
  • Distinguished School Board Member Award
  • Michael G. George Distinguished Service Award

Nominations for each of these awards will be screened after the May 15 deadline. Awards will be presented by the WMEA president during the Wisconsin State Music Conference keynote address in Madison this October.

This conference will bring together outstanding high school students across Wisconsin who share an interest in learning more about what is involved in entering a career in music, especially in band. Students will work with music extraordinaire Quincy Hilliard in a band rehearsal setting, discover the "why" behind rehearsal procedures, learn about the skills necessary to be a successful musician and music educator. More information and the student registration form [.pdf] is available online.
