Feature: Tips for the First-Year Teacher
by Dan Hopkins
First-year teachers undoubtedly get an opportunity to try their hand at new musical selections, lesson techniques and programming. Classroom management, however, is probably the most challenging issue.
WMEA Awards and Recognition

Recognizing people who make a difference is one of the most rewarding activities for any organization. WMEA sponsors several ways to recognize people who have sustained a commitment to music education and made a positive impact in the school, community or state: 25+ Years of Teacher Service Recognition, Richard G. Gaarder Award, Distinguished Administrator Award, Michael G. George Award, Community Service Awards and Wisconsin Award for Excellence in Teaching Music (nomination packet available now - March 7 deadline).
Help Plan Conference 2008

Mark your calendar for the 2008 Wisconsin State Music Conference Planning Session -- January 5, 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m., Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells!

All WMEA members are invited to join with other music educators from around the state at this special planning session. This is your chance to get involved. Your help is needed:

  • Identifying topics and presenters.
  • Refining and prioritizing workshop sessions.
  • Suggesting special guests and events.
Upcoming Professional Development Workshops

Music teachers throughout Wisconsin have been taking advantage of the wide variety of professional development offerings with graduate credit and videoconference participation available through the Wisconsin Center for Music Education. Visit www.wsmamusic.org/center often for the ever-expanding menu of upcoming workshops. Here is a sampling of what's to come:

  • January 12 - Beyond Ratings: Preparing Students for Solo & Ensemble Festival (videoconference locations available)
  • January 26 & February 16 - Building a Classroom Web Site (onsite version)
  • February 4 - March 9 - Building a Classroom Web Site (online course)
  • February 22-23 - Combining Kodály Methods with Hispanic Folk Songs (held at Edgewood College)

Master Teacher Interview
by Jim Meuth   with Mike Korth
It was my pleasure to interview Mike Korth, the band director at Monticello High School. Mike has been teaching at Monticello for 30 years. It is his first and only teaching job. He started there in 1978 and was the fourth director in five years. As his program grew, Monticello eventually added a half-time band position. The current high school band enrollment is 57 students from a high school population of 127.
Share a Tradition in "Wisconsin School Musician!"

The April issue of Wisconsin School Musician will share a variety of ways tradition can be explored and celebrated, relative to music in our schools and communities and we'd like to hear from you! Please tell us about a special tradition celebrated in your school or community, relative to music education. We will select a variety of submissions to publish in the April issue!
MENC 2008 National Biennial Conference

Wisconsin music educators have a front row seat to all of the action when MENC's National Biennial Conference comes to Milwaukee, April 9-13. Check out the 2008 Biennial Conference sessions, special performances (featuring several Wisconsin ensembles and organizations) and registration information at www.menc.org.

Next Direction for Band

WMEA has a new conference for band students who will be entering grades 11-12 in 2008. Next Direction for Band will bring together outstanding high school students across Wisconsin who share an interest in learning more about what is involved in entering a music career, especially in band. Students will work with nationally known master director Quincy Hilliard in a band rehearsal setting. Music educators are asked to share information about this opportunity with their best and brightest students. Next Direction for Band is based on the renowned WCDA program for choral students.
